Gulf Sport Edition 13 Page

The middle part of the year is traditionally one of the busiest for Gulf, despite the fact that the football season has ended.

It kicked off in fine style as Gulf’s cricket team in the Indian Premier League, the Chennai Super Kings, lived up to their name and put in a super performance to mark their return to the IPL in the most regal way possible, by winning the IPL crown.

Motorsport-wise there are some huge events for Gulf to celebrate this year with the Monaco Historic Grand Prix and, of course, the Le Mans 24 Hours – with the 50th anniversary of the first Gulf Victory there.

Not only that, but we had some fantastic performances on two wheels to celebrate, as Gulf took to the Isle of Man to compete in the legendary TT for the first time and some three weeks later, we also witnessed the first appearance of a Gulf bike and rider on a World Superbike Podium.

Gulf has also extended its association with King Racing to encompass a busier year for the drag team than they have ever undertaken.

Even though Manchester United’s season is over, on the pitch, its players have been making their presence felt at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia and the team has already been busy in the transfer market, ahead of August’s return to Premier League action. Manchester United Legends have also proved as popular as ever in appearances all over the world, in the last couple of months.

2018 is already turning into the busiest sporting year for Gulf yet, offering more opportunities than ever to activate one or more parts of our excellent sporting platform to best advantage for your business.

With so many highlights, it’s hard to know where to start, but a quick glance through the contents of this edition of Gulf Sport will hopefully give you some inspiration – as well as an idea of what is to come over the next few months….

Wishing you good sport and even better business!

The World Superbike Championship (SBK) is now starting its mid-year break, but, the first part of this 2018 season has been arguably the most memorable to date.

We have witnessed comebacks from injury, which have spawned some incredibly brave performances. We have witnessed Loris Baz on the Gulf Althea BMW taking home a trophy for a top three qualifying performance at Donington in the UK and we have witnessed some increasingly consistent top six finishes.

However, Gulf’s long awaited appearance on a World Superbike Rostrum still eluded both Gulf Althea BMW and Milwaukee BMW, until the recent race at Laguna Seca. The Milwaukee Aprilia rider had secured his best result to date, in Race 1 at the California venue and, starting from Pole, Eugene Laverty led for the first quarter of the race before being overtaken by World Champion Jonathan Rae on his Kawasaki and Ducati’s Chaz Davies.

Eugene then saw off a strong challenge from the factory Yamaha pairing to finally claim the podium that he, the team and Gulf have been working towards for more than two years.

This was followed by a second consecutive podium at the weekend’s Misano round. Eugene Laverty converted third on the grid into the same result in the race and, had it not been for an electronics problem intervening he might well have finished even higher, as he ran second for three quarters of the race.

Meanwhile, Gulf Althea BMW Racing have also visited the podium, as rising star Alessandro Delbianco took the Runners-up position in the Czech race in the Superstock 1000 championship that accompanies all of the European rounds of the World Superbike series.

The Gulf bikes, have generally been showing great pace in recent races. The next round at Portimao in Portugal, ten weeks hence, will hopefully see the Gulf teams maintaining a real challenge for further honours.

The 2018 Le Mans proved to be one of the most memorable for Gulf – with many activities that illustrated the breadth of Gulf’s sporting and commercial partnerships, past present and future. This was combined, of course, with Gulf participating in the famous 24 Hour endurance race.

On Friday of race week Gulf made its mark in the town of La Chartre sur-le-Loir, whose Hotel de France, 50 years ago, was the Gulf team’s base for its attack on the Le Mans 24 Hours. The brand showcased its wide-ranging partnerships to invited Media and more than 60 VIP guests, from every continent.

Appearances and Q & A sessions from Gulf’s Le Mans contestants, Gulf Racing and WIN Motorsports; Manchester United and England footballing legend, Andrew Cole and Gulf TT Hero, Davo Johnson, were combined with the launch of two new TAG Heuer Gulf-Edition watches. Not to mention the appearance of 1968 Le Mans-winning Team Boss John Horsman and other members of the victorious Gulf squad.

Gulf recreated the spirit of the victorious Gulf-JW Automotive team driving its race cars to the Le Mans race track. Current Porsche race cars and Gulf’s Isle of Man TT Superbike were fired up and driven through the streets of the town and down the main road, in the direction of Le Mans. Andrew Cole rode in the parade in a beautiful 1964 Chevrolet Corvette roadster.

On Saturday, Gulf officially celebrated at the circuit, with a huge anniversary cake (as pictured in the intro), where guests were joined by Gulf racer and Le Mans winning driver, Derek Bell.

Qualifying and the early part of the 2018 24 Hour race gave Gulf real hope of again mounting the top step of the podium at Le Mans, 50 years on from the initial win but two high speed excursions off track, and the resultant contact with the barriers, put paid to a top three finish. The Gulf Racing crew twice repaired the car, eventually bringing the Porsche 911 RSR home to a top ten finish in the category.

Gulf’s watch partners, Tag Heuer, launched two new Gulf Edition watches at Le Mans.

The first, the 50th Anniversary Gulf Monaco, limited to only 50 pieces sold out instantly! The second, the new Gulf Edition Formula 1 watch is the most affordable Gulf watch TAG Heuer have ever produced but, like its siblings, it is absolutely beautiful – as can be seen – and comes in its own special Gulf presentation box.

To take advantage of the Gulf partner rate with its substantial discount, contact Paul Menezes at GOI:

Chennai Super Kings marked its return to the Indian Premier League – the world’s leading national T20 tournament – by clinching victory in the final, to seal its comeback after an absence of two years.

Led by Gulf Brand Ambassador, MS Dhoni, CSK had been the first team to make it through to the finals, beating Sun Risers Hyderabad (SRH) in the semi-finals. SRH then went through to an eliminator match, which they won, giving them the opportunity to face the Super Kings in the final – and it was fitting that the two top teams in the league part of the competition, should contest the final.

CSK were set 178 to win. An incredible 117 not out from opening batsman, Shane Watson – the highest innings ever in an IPL Final – was the decisive factor in the match. Watson hit a century in 51 balls, scoring an amazing 27 runs off the 13th over. The Gulf-sponsored team won by 8 wickets, with an over and a half to spare.

“We had that belief that if we didn’t lose too many wickets, we had the firepower to get many runs,” MS Dhoni said afterwards. “It has been a fantastic win.”

Every two years, the Automobile Club of Monaco (ACM) hosts the Monaco Historic Grand Prix, and this year it formed one of Gulf’s ‘Blue Riband’ events for Gulf entities worldwide to use as part of their marketing and business activities.

Gulf guests from Europe to South East Asia took advantage of the opportunity of attending and, based on the feedback, the weekend – hosted jointly by Gulf, our watch partners, TAG Heuer, and the ROFGO Collection – proved to be one of the most successful yet staged by Gulf.

The curtain raiser, an evening hosted by Roald Goethe and the ROFGO organisation at the family’s villa just outside Nice, was, by common consent, a superb way to start the weekend. Gulf guests networked with ROFGO and TAG Heuer guests, as well as among themselves, in a carnival atmosphere, offset against the backdrop of the bay of Nice.

Saturday saw the first of two days based at the track, with guests not only able to view the qualifying day from the ACM’s Classic Club facility but also to watch some of qualifying from the pit wall, after having had a tour of all of the pit garages on the famous Grand Prix circuit.

On Saturday evening TAG Heuer, in partnership with Prince Albert of Monaco, gave guests a private viewing of the Monaco Motor Museum – complete with the firing up of one of the museum’s Bugatti GP cars. There was also a live demonstration of watch making and the chance to drive a Ferrari F1 simulator. This was followed by dinner at one of Monaco’s landmarks – the Café de Paris.

The Isle of Man TT is one of the world’s oldest and most famous motorbike races. This year a blue and orange bike competed for the first time in this incredible sporting arena. The event is one of pilgrimage for motorcyclists from all over the world, with 60,000 people – the majority on their motorbikes, making the short ferry trip from the UK mainland.

SMR – the outfit responsible for the Milwaukee Aprilia team in World Superbikes – entered two of the latest BMW S1000RR bikes for the two-week festival of bike racing:- one in the Superbike races and the other in the Superstock race, both under the Gulf BMW Road Racing Team banner.

David “Davo” Johnson was the rider selected to take on the 37.73miles (60km) of ordinary public roads that make up the TT course and the Australian finished a superb fourth in both the Superbike and Superstock races – his fastest laps averaging around 134mph (215kmh) around the course, and the Superbike variant clocking a staggering 208mph (333kmh) at its fastest point.

As the 2018 FIFA World Cup has now reached its latter stages, there is but a month or so until the start of the 2018-19 Premier League Season and Gulf’s partners in Football, Manchester United, have already made some high-profile signings in preparation for the upcoming Premier League and Champions League campaigns.

United have signed Brazilian Midfielder, Frederico Rodrigues de Paula Santos (Fred), from Shakhtar Donetsk, Portuguese Defender, José Diogo Dalot Teixeira, from FC Porto and Goalkeeper Lee Grant from Stoke City and, with the transfer window still open, who knows if further players may head to Old Trafford in the near future.

In the meantime, Marouane Fellaini has signed a new contract at United and has certainly proven his ability to win matches for his native Belgium. In the World Cup he has scored to help take his country through to the Quarter Finals of the competition.

Other United stars have also made their mark on the competition, with a full team’s worth of players reaching the knockout stage of the competition. Time will tell if any come home with winners medals…

There will be little rest for many of the first team squad, as the club heads out to America the following week with warm up fixtures against Club America and San Jose Earthquakes before taking part in the International Champions Cup, with matches against AC Milan, Liverpool and Real Madrid.

The final pre-season match will see United taking on Bayern Munich a week before they face Leicester City at Old Trafford in the opening match of the 2018/19 Premier League – the full fixture list for which follows.

With one match of the season left to play in the intercontinental Investec Super Rugby Championship, New Zealand’s Highlanders – Gulf’s partners in Rugby Union – lie sixth in the league table.

Super Rugby sees top flight club teams from Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Japan and Argentina all competing against each other over the course of the season. The Highlanders currently sit in the middle of five teams who are all grouped closely together in the top half of the table.

The Highlanders boast no less than six current New Zealand Internationals and will be hoping that they will help the team to victory against Melbourne’s Rebels in the final league match of the Super Rugby season, at home, on July 14th.

Although Ian King has called time on his European Drag Racing career, Gulf is continuing to support King Racing and the amazing 1500BHP bike that has, from its inception, always raced in Gulf colours.

The world’s most powerful bike continues to run on everyday Gulf road lubricants and this year is being campaigned, in the FIM European Top Fuel Drag Racing championship by rapid newcomer to Top Fuel, Filippos Papafilippou.

Having made the transition from the Funny Bike category, “Fast Phil” showed he had adapted quickly. At the opening round of the Euro Championship at Santa Pod, he recorded one of the fastest runs in history, a 5.782 second pass for the quarter mile, on only his second competitive run on the bike! He then went on to win the final, despite the bike’s parachute deploying before the finish line.
Check out the story of the weekend on Facebook.

The bike is now one of the star attractions at this weekend’s Harley-Davison 115th Anniversary celebrations in Prague (pictured arriving at the event). The event is expected to attract in the region of 150,000 visitors – some 60,000 of whom will be on their motorbikes. It should make an excellent debut event for Gulf’s new Czech lubricant distribution outfit.

The bike then comes back to the UK for the Goodwood Festival of Speed, where Ian King himself will thrill the 100,000+ crowds expected for the event, with his monster burnouts up the course, before the team set off for the Nitrolympx in Germany in August, where Phil will compete in front of a similar size crowd, in round two of the Euro Championship.

Gulf helped give thousands of Chinese Manchester United fans a glimpse of some of their sporting heroes as it hosted another in the extremely popular series of “I Love United” events, in Beijing.

With a host of different activities on offer for fans as well as the appearance of United Legends, Ji-sung Park, Dwight Yorke and Ronny Johnsen, the event was certainly one of the biggest and best Gulf has yet staged together with its football partners.

A further return is eagerly awaited….

The ROFGO Junior motorsport effort this year not only encompasses their ongoing karting programme, but has extended to single seater racing, as Benjamin Goethe makes the step up to Formula 4.

We wish them every success in their various championship campaigns for 2018.

Gulf’s Hungarian distributors were recently out promoting the brand and its products at the European Truck Racing Championships in Budapest. Check out their activity from the excellent video they produced.

Manchester United Legend, Ronny Johnsen, was one of the star attractions of Posidonia 2018 as he featured in a Q & A session with Gulf Oil Marine’s MD, Keith Mullin.

GOM also produced this video, “Learn from the Best” which uses many of the partnerships on Gulf’s sporting and commercial platforms to great effect.

GPO has just opened its latest shop in another of Germany’s permanent classic car centres. This one is in Stuttgart, home, of course, to Mercedes and Porsche. Gulf’s sporting heritage features prominently throughout.

Gulf in the Netherlands together with Gulf Gas+Power had a striking presence at one of the country’s major car events, last weekend – the Concours d’Elegance.

The impressive Gulf enclave was visible from everywhere in the arena and featured two GT40s, as well as a Tesla and a Porsche 911 Carrera. The stand was extremely popular and one of the many visitors, pictured here, was 1971 Le Mans 24 Hours winner, Gijs van Lennep.

Henrike Koetzier:

This weekend sees the running of Le Mans Classic, the festival of historic motorsport that takes place every two years on the full Le Mans Circuit.

Dropping in to visit the ROFGO pit and re-acquaint himself with one of his former race cars, the Gulf Mirage GR7, was multi-Le Mans winner, Derek Bell, resplendent, of course, in a Gulf jacket from GPO…

On track, it was a good weekend for Gulf, with ROFGO’s Roald Goethe and Stuart Hall taking third overall in the 1965-70 cars category. The car carrying the pair to the podium was a Lola T70 sports racer, which had previously been driven by Swedish legend, Ronnie Peterson and team-owner Picko Troberg. The car raced in its original Swedish colours, with branding from Gulf Sweden, who sponsored the car at the time.

Also, various ROFGO cars, including the Le Mans winning Gulf GR8, feature in a fantastic exhibit at the Le Mans Museum “Blue and Orange – a Team, a Legend”. The display is truly excellent and runs throughout the summer, until September. It is well worth a visit, even if there is nothing happening on track.

Visitors to the recent UK round of the World Superbike Championship were able to catch the action from the British Talent Cup – the championship staged by Moto GP and World Superbike organisers, Dorna, aimed at finding the race stars of the future.

Gulf is the official lubricant supplier for the championship – with all of the riders’ Honda bikes running on Gulf Syntrac 4T Superbike Oil.

The next round will run at the British Moto GP meeting in August.

The FIFA World Cup is currently in its latter stages and Gulf Oil Argentina developed very patriotic oil drum sleeves for the occasion, which proudly carry their national football team’s colours.

As can be seen here, they achieve the dual objectives of developing the brand in Argentina and, at the same time, hiding the competition!

Gaston Mienko:

One of the assets that Gulf has on offer from its partnership with Manchester United is the opportunity to run Gulf-Manchester United Football Schools. Gulf Oil Italy has used them very effectively with its clients and recently ran the latest, with great success, at the Centro Sportivo Mario Rigamonti in Brescia.

Miki Basso:

Gulf in the Netherlands is now the proud sponsor of two of the world’s leading BMX racers, Niek and Justin Kimmann. 21 year-old Niek has already won a World Cup and is currently second in the BMX Elite rankings, while his 19 year old brother Justin is making rapid progress and is on the verge of breaking into the world’s top 50.

Gulf Oil Philippines (GOP) is invariably creative in its use of the Gulf sporting platform in its marketing initiatives and events.

“Celebrate Your Passion” Gulf Racing banners are now creating a splash at various locations across the country.

GOP also recently sent the Philippines’ leading motorbike vlogger – Makina – to the Isle of Man, to record his impressions of Gulf’s first TT campaign. There are several excellent pieces that Makina produced, all of which are worth looking at, but try this as a starter….
